Flowers are flowers, birds are birds — at ease, untroubled, a realm of quiet concord. Here Wei Huailiang returns to the pure pleasure of brush and ink: the lyrical heart of the Eastern tradition, where a single bird on an empty field can hold the whole of spring.

About the Work · 作品自述

A single small bird stands alone in a vast field of white; down the right runs a line of the artist’s own archaic clerical-script calligraphy — I Am a Little Bird. A few strokes, and the whole sheet turns luminous and open. No crowded composition, no heavy ink: plain, spare and pure to the very limit, yet holding an inexhaustible depth of Eastern feeling and Zen stillness. The bird is alert and alive — lost in thought, or gazing into the distance; the great blank is not emptiness but eloquence, where “silence outsings all sound,” leaving room for the viewer’s imagination and repose. It is Wei Huailiang’s most distilled self-portrait as ‘a thinking bird’ — a meditation on life, a longing for freedom, a pursuit of stillness.

Critical Appraisal ·
The great Way is simple, and Wei Huailiang understands it to the marrow — casting off the crowded compositions and heavy ink of convention, governing the complex by the plain. The work is Zhu Xi’s ‘half-acre pond’: in its utter spareness it mirrors the light of the whole sky. It calls to mind Bada Shanren, whose bare brushwork carries the deepest feeling and thought; or Zhang Dai’s snow upon West Lake — a few words tracing the solitude and purity of heaven and earth. Plain to the utmost, simple to the utmost, pure to the utmost: only so can the heart be brought to peace, and Zen be born.
